SOME of the area’s top juniors enjoyed a great day at the Mellor and Townscliffe Junior Open, with Styal Golf Club’s Daniel Lynch winning the coveted trophy.

Lynch, who finished with an unbeaten gross score of 79, coped well with the heat to produce a brilliant golfing display on the Mellor greens, which were in great condition.

Daniel, alongside the best young female golfer Siobhan Grayson (Ringway Golf Club), is now entered into the qualifying for the Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship.

This could result in a memorable trip for the 21 finalists (12 boys and nine girls) to PGA Catalunya Resort, Barcelona, home to Spain’s number one golf course.

Captain’s Day at Alderley Edge Golf Club was played over two rounds, with Ron Ricketts (64), Oliver Lane and Bill Fisher (both 65) setting the early pace.

In round two it was even closer, as Alex Pannell led with 69 after a card play-off with Robert Anderson.

Just a shot behind sat Simon Edbury, Dan Featherstone, Simon Allen, Steven Yakub and Steve Bell.

Alderley Edge ladies were also in action with a nine-hole stableford. Karen Pennington was in hot form with 23 points, taking the lead over Helen Williams on 21.

Styal Golf Club’s seniors were in Yellow Tee action, with Terry Hooper on top with 42 points – one more than Robert Lynn and Len Rowland.

The familiar name of Tom Bloor topped a Wednesday stableford at Styal, but it needed a card play-off on 36 points to take him home from the challenge of Peter Cordwell and Joe Bradshaw.

The latest round of the Styal Ladies Summer Cup was won by Pat Millatt with her total of 17 points being enough to see off Chris Pogson’s 14.
